Surviving lockdown 2.0

Writer: Thebeautythatsurroundsus_Thebeautythatsurroundsus_

As we all know, the ever imminent lockdown has finally arrived... We are a few weeks in now, so I thought I would share some advice and thoughts with you all about how I have found it, and the things that help me!

I know everybody has a different lockdown experience, and there now feels like two tiers between those studying/working in education, and everybody else who has had to go back to working from home. I am really fortunate to be able to continue my studies and go into the lab, but I know many people have had to stop or adapt their work in light of the new measures.. Given the extra time at home, there are several things I have found help me to cope and 'enjoy' my time...

  1. TAKE A BREAK. Having the country in lockdown is a perfect opportunity to take a step back and enjoy some relaxation. Practice self-care by reading a book, having a bath or pampering yourself - now, more than ever this is so important!

  2. KEEP IN TOUCH. I know it's hard for us all being away from our friends and family, but modern technology is wonderful, and it should definitely be utilised! It doesn't have to be a quiz, it can just be a catch up with a friend (virtual coffee dates are my personal fave). I know sometimes these feel like effort and it's so easy to lock yourself away, but it's so important to try and continue to 'socialise' as you would do usually.

  3. ITS OKAY NOT TO BE OKAY. Everybody has periods of feeling down or low, having a change in routine or a loss of socialising - this is okay! The most important thing is to talk about it, or even journal it! Either way, make sure it's out of your system.

  4. TAKE UP A NEW HOBBY - Or rediscover an old one! Having extra time at home is the perfect opportunity to enjoy doing new things, or things you enjoy but never have the time to do! This could be anything from playing a musical instrument, to knitting! It's always good to expand your skill set and now is the perfect time

  5. BE KIND. To yourself and others... It's normal to feel or act differently in unusual times, so be kind and don't expect too much of yourself - the same with friends and family. If they are a little more distant or preoccupied with their own things, don't judge them too harshly - although it is worth checking in on people if they are appearing more distant than usual, just to check they're okay!

  6. GO FOR A WALK. Just because we're in lockdown, you can still go on nice walks and even get a takeaway coffee - this is the highlight of my weekends at the minute, and always makes me feel so much better!! In fact, the pics below are from last week's lockdown wander!

Times are tough, and everyone is dealing with lockdown in a different way - just try to give yourself a break and try to make the most of your time - whether it's getting closer to the people you live with, or embracing the freedom by practicing self-care or taking up a new hobby... We're all in this together, and we will get through it!

I wanted to keep this one fairly short and sweet, as I know none of us want to focus on the current situation too much... As always, my DM's are open if anyone does want a chat and comments/questions are always gratefully received!

Stay safe everybody,

B x
