Sanctuary in the Bail, Lincoln

Writer: Thebeautythatsurroundsus_Thebeautythatsurroundsus_

I got some really lovely feedback from my post all about The Botanist in Lincoln, so I've decided to try another little review - I hope it's another good read for you all!

I went for lunch today on whim to 'Sanctuary in the Bail', in the Bailgate area of Lincoln. Ben was heading back to London, so we thought we would go and grab some food beforehand. This is a lovely place to go because it's also actually a shop, selling some beautiful homeware items - I am definitely going back for some plant pots and a candle I had my eye on!!!

They then have the cafe to the right hand side and also a really sweet courtyard outside the back, which is a complete hidden gem. Upon entering, customers are greeted with a brilliant covid secure poster (already a tick in my book!!), explaining what is expected of customers, including the requirement to wear facemasks until seated (which made it feel even safer), and compulsory hand sanitising.

We decided to try the outside courtyard area and were quickly seated and provided menus. They had a brilliant soft drink range and the usual coffee list, including iced coffee (second tick!!!). The menu choice wasn't huge, but I certainly think there would be something for most people, including sandwiches, ciabatta and jacket potatoes. I went for a large iced coffee and a feta, roasted vegetable and pesto ciabatta (which came with salad and crisps), and Ben went for an elderflower soft drink and the meatball and mozzarella ciabatta.

Unfortunately we had to wait about 30minutes to get our drinks and then about another 20mins before the food, which was a shame. BUT it was a lovely sunny Sunday and they were clearly busy and on skeleton staff, so I honestly can't complain too much! My only other bug bear was, for some reason, the back of the shop had christmas music playing... I know this is a silly thing to be bothered by, but it was actually quite irritating to hear the same few jingles on repeat for over an hour.. Especially in September...!

Despite this, the food was CERTAINLY worth the wait!!! I honestly couldn't fault it. The ciabattas had so much filling we couldn't even shut them, served with a generous portion of crisps and a lovely salad and tasty dressing. My iced coffee was slightly strange - I think it might have been made with coffee syrup rather than an actual espresso, but despite not being quite as expected, it was a really nice, sweeter coffee, which went really well with the saltiness of the feta ciabatta. The prices were incredibly reasonable - the bill came to just under £20 in total, and the staff were super lovely and clearly happy to cater to any need!

So... What did I think??
